Mermaid Friend Nicola Cameron Guest Post & Giveaway!

Mermaid CarleneHello Fishy Friends and Happy Friday! Today we are welcoming erotic romance author, Nicola Cameron, to the lagoon and she’s brought a pretty hilarious bit about her muse. Nicola writes in many genres including, wait…let me rephrase that. What doesn’t Nicola write? While her muse may have been on hiatus for most of November, it’s clear she and Nicola have a pretty healthy relationship most days! We hope you enjoy this funny bit. Be sure to leave a comment too! Nicola is giving away a copy of Storm Season, the first book in her paranormal erotic Olympic Cove series, plus a sneak preview of the first chapter of Breaker Zone (Book 2). Winner will be chosen at random from commenters on this post. Take it away, Nicola…

The Muse, She Can Be a Real Bitch

I have to tell you, I had great plans for November this year. The first two days of the month were going to correspond with the last two days of my 20th wedding anniversary cruise, which is a lovely way to kick off a month in any case. After that, I would get home and segue straight into National Novel Writing Month by finishing my historical erotic romance Behind the Iron Cross. If I had enough time left over, I would finish the first draft of Olympic Cove Book Two, Breaker Zone for dessert.

My first mistake was that I announced these plans on various social media sites. Have you ever heard the phrase, fate laughs when you make plans? Because that’s pretty much what happened to me.

See, when we got home from the cruise the Other Half and I both started up with a dry, tickly cough. Two days later we were stranded in bed with what our doctor later diagnosed as bronchitis but I suspect was the opening segue of a particularly nasty flu making the rounds. We’re talking fever, gunk in the head and lungs, muscle aches, dizziness, the whole nine yards.

In my case, I also wound up with a nifty case of vertigo that lasted for well over a week. Have you ever tried to write when you feel like throwing up every time you stood up? When you have to wear a sanitary pad because you’re coughing so hard you pee a little each time? When you’re so hot and listless you don’t even want to read (you, the person who would read in her sleep if she could keep her eyes open)? Continue reading

Perfect Love and a New Release!

origin_69719394

I recently discovered the 2003 motion picture, Cold Mountain. What a beautiful and complete story. It has easily captured my personal slot for favorite all-time movie. I am in love.

But I have discovered a side effect. I almost called it an unfortunate side effect but I’m not ready to label it as such just yet because it’s inspired me to think and consider and observe. The deal is that ever since I saw the movie, I’ve wondered what it would be like to be loved the way Inman loved Ada.

The man walked miles through peril and impossible conditions to make his way back to a woman he barely knew. Four years stood between them and their last brief meeting whereupon they shared one chaste kiss and a handful of spoken words.  I used to oo and ah over a sparkly vampire who watched his sweetheart while she slept. I didn’t think it could get much more romantic than that. Now, Inman’s vulnerability and hopeful perseverance and Ada’s incredible devotion to him are what I wish for all couples in love.

And I ask myself, does my husband love me the way Inman loved Ada?Mermaid Carlene

Can our love ever be as perfect as theirs?

The answer, I realized very quickly, is heck no!

If there is one thing my husband knows, it’s that I’d be very underwhelmed were he perfect, were I perfect, were we perfect.

When I was in the ninth grade and hubby the eleventh, we happened to attend one of our high school’s basketball games the same night. I knew of my husband, but that was about it. My date that night was a senior from a different school. He was sweet, cute, taller, and older, had long bouncy bangs and he loved music and art. To my fifteen year old self, he was perfect.

It didn’t last long.

Hubby would later tell me that he’d seen us that night, me and Mr. Perfect, and knew he wouldn’t have long to wait. I asked him why and he said it was in the way my date let me lead him around the gym. That young man was very sweet, but hubby was right. We were out of balance and things ended quickly.

And then one day during a school earthquake drill, hubby walked up to me where I stood on a grass athletic field, tapped me on the shoulder, waved hello, and then walked away.

Um, yeah, I was perplexed, slightly irritated, slightly flattered and hooked.  It’s been that way for twenty-three years now.

I love the way Inman loves Ada. But I love even more the way Adrian loves Carlene. 😉

Do you ever see or read things in books and movies that make you wish and wonder what that would feel like if it happened to you?

Oh, and if you’d like to check out a story that’s pretty dear to my heart, my newest Sin Pointe book just released on Thanksgiving Day! Find Sin’s Haven (A Sin Pointe Novel, #3) here:

Thank you Veterans

Mermaid CarleneGood Morning 🙂

Today I was all set to talk about my new favorite movie and how I believe within it I’ve found the perfect example of “revealing character”. At last month’s Washington Romance Writers meeting, the brilliant author, Alma Katsu, spoke to us about that topic in relation to conflict in a story. I’ll save that post for my slot next month because this morning, as I was about to schedule my post, I received an email from my baby brother letting me know he is set to deploy soon.

When someone you love and care about writes that email or leaves that message, “I’m deploying”, how do you respond?

For me, it’s a mix of pride and understanding. I think the reason for this personal reaction is that I’m extremely proud of anyone who serves their country so selflessly. I find that type of courage comforting. Having sent my hubby off on several deployments, I know first hand of the ways a person will grow from the experience in a way I think only this can do for them. There is also a part of me who believes with everything I have that each person on this planet has a distinct journey in life that they were meant to travel. For some of us, that includes deploying to conflicts around the world. Having negative thoughts in my heart about a loved one’s deployment seems counterproductive. So that is where my heart lies as I let it settle in that baby brother will be setting out on this part of his journey soon.

On November 11th, Veteran’s Day, who will you be celebrating, missing, appreciating? Please share, I’d love to celebrate them with you.

My list includes the following for their courageous service in:military-child-21868868

Hubby, Operation Iraqi Freedom

Dad, Vietnam War

Grandpa Barney, Korean War

Grandpa Wiley, World War 2, Korean War, Vietnam War

Family friend Susana, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom

Baby brother…fair thee well and see you when you get home 🙂

To all of our Veterans, past and present, I appreciate you all.  And above all else, Thank You.

Fishy Kisses,

Carlene

Abandoned in a Graveyard…kewl

IMAG2555Happy Almost Halloween Fishy Friends!

I fear I may have celebrated a wee bit early and the experience was so cool, I’m not sure it can be topped. Okay, I guess with enough mini-snickers and tootsie rolls, actual Halloween night will be outstanding too. But let me tell you about how I spent last month’s Friday the 13th…

It was a cold, cold night. Okay, not so much for me because I’ve lived in Virginia five years now. But for my aunt who was visiting from San Diego, it was a cold, cold night. Dare I say blistery even. On an earlier excursion that week, I’d taken my aunt to Old Town Alexandria in search of cupcakes, purses and trinkets from my favorite local store, The Christmas Attic. After giving ourselves quite a fright on the upper level of the store, we scurried back down where my aunt discovered a flyer for the perfect way to spend the upcoming night of Friday the 13th.

A dinner cruise on the Potomac, I wondered. Horse drawn carriage ride through the historic streets, perhaps? Her eyes glittered (because she’s sparkly like that) but I, having seen that glint before, (usually when she’s tormenting me by singing the Freddy Krueger song) recognized the pure evil (okay, maybe not evil, just a little ornery) of her intentions.

Ann and Carlene(Auntie and I then, in typical fashion…her grinning, me very scared)

She smiled, and showed me the flyer.

“Alexandria’s Original Ghost & Graveyard Tour where you’ll walk following an 18th century costumed guide by lantern light through the haunted streets of Old Town…”

Sounded absolutely lovely!

“…At the tour’s end your guide will abandon you in a graveyard!”

Sounded immediately less lovely.

However my aunt had travelled all the way from San Diego, braving the harsh east coast weather (something they don’t have back home–weather, that is, they literally don’t have weather in San Diego.) And she’d bravely gone inside Le Tache Couples Boutique earlier between our rounds of cupcake and purse shopping. I supposed I owed it to her.

Well, I must admit, the tour was fabulous! I loved hearing about the unsolved mysteries, tales of romance and angry ghosts looking for revenge.

Final verdict? Highly recommend being abandoned in a graveyard at least once in your life. And if you can plan it for a Friday the 13th, even better!

Happy Halloween Eve Eve Eve everyone 🙂

IMAG2487Auntie and I now, in typical fashion…she’s fabulous, I’m fabulously silly but not so scared anymore!)

Getting Into Character: Becoming Hazel

Mermaid CarleneHello Fishy Friends,

Right about now, this mermaid should be calling it a night. But I can’t stop tugging on the ends of my hair to see that the once light blonde ends I usually sport are now a cinnamon color. Since I’m sleepless in the land of auburn tresses, I’ve decided to post pictures of why exactly I’m living life as a red head.

It’s all in the name of writing research, getting into character to be more precise. The heroine in my current Work In Progress, Hazel, is a red head (think Victoria the First, of Twilight). I realized quickly that the best way to get into her head, so to speak, would be to experience life as similarly to her as I could. I went as far as to color my hair in a manner that I felt she would use, and being a very bohemian, earthy kind of woman, that meant something natural.

It came in really handy that I’m a Lush addict and they happen to sell Henna which was right up my girl, Hazel’s, alley. I should say that I researched henna thoroughly before using it which means that I’m in it for the long haul.  (Or until I write a short-haired heroine and in the name of research…snip, snip, snip goes the hair!)

The result? Well, I love it. It’s rich, shiny, thicker, curlier and I feel a definite spiciness about my new mane. Not to mention a daring side who thinks it would be a great idea to share the pics of my “Getting Into Character: Becoming Hazel” process.

IMG_6029

Yes, that says “Caca” but let’s just pretend it doesn’t…or that it sounds exquisite and fancy in a faked French accent 🙂 In all seriousness, this is the Lush brand of henna and it’s a chunk of henna mixed with cocoa butter and coffee and other wonderful smelling things pressed with a tea brick to make lovely little designs.

IMG_6031

After we break off our desired amount of henna chunk, we run to the bathroom and paper it for protection against staining. I used my Lush catalogue. Very pretty.

IMG_6032

Now we race back to the kitchen and begin cooking our henna in a bain marie which if anyone knows me…yeah, I had to look this up. In the end, it turns out all you need is a pot for boiling water and a big enough glass bowl to set on top of it to keep your henna warm.

IMG_6033

Back to the bathroom with your gooey creation that resembles green poo and brownie mix (but smells wonderful)…Ahhh, now you know why they call it Caca. 🙂

IMG_6034

As neat as you try to be while applying the Caca henna to your hair, as it begins to dry, tiny little Caca bits will begin to fall at your feet. This is when I feel you may as well squish them between your toes because it’s fun and standing on the sides of your feet to avoid them starts to hurt after a while. 🙂

IMG_6027

So this was Light Blonde Carlene Mermaid…

IMG_6038

And now we have Green Poo Carlene Mermaid…

IMG_6040

And this was Glamorous Carlene Mermaid before she hit the sack to sleep with the henna on her head all night, ensuring vibrant color when she awoke…

IMG_6042

Which is exactly what Carlene Mermaid got! Oh I’m sorry, not Carlene Mermaid…Hazel Mermaid, who will be with us for a while. 🙂

And now for the really fun part of researching my heroine Hazel…I get to pretend “hand kiss” her hero to make sure we’re doing that right too, but that’s an entirely different post for another time. Ahh, the things a romance writer will do in the name of being thorough.

Think I’m ready for bed now 😉

The Anatomy of a Romance Book Purchase

Mermaid CarleneBack in April of this year, I happened to sign on to Twitter as I randomly do maybe a couple times a week.
I saw a tweet from a blog that always catches my eye because it’s super pretty and has a great name—Fangs, Wands and Fairy Dust.
The reason this particular tweet jumped out at me was for the short mention of a first name very dear to my heart in the spotlighted book’s title.
I clicked the link to check out the post.
It was a spotlight on a new release by an author who was new to me.
I read the post and commented, answering the question the author posed to the blog readers.
I thought, “That’s a great sounding book. I love the cover. The name in the title makes me smile.”
I thought I should go ahead and purchase that book then and there.
But as things often work out this way, something else popped up and I had to abandon my lovely book-buying thoughts.
Time passed.
Four months to be exact.
Many other book purchases took place.
Today I signed on to Twitter as I randomly do maybe a couple times a week.
I saw a tweet from a blog that always catches my eye…Fangs, Wands and Fairy Dust.
A-ha! A reminder about that book….
I searched for that book with that special name in the title and the cover I’d admired so much.
Success! I found the original post.
I immediately hopped on over to Amazon where I typed in the author and title and hit purchase before an errand or a phone call or an important email sidetracked me again.
Time cycles each of our days this way and that. This was the anatomy of how a book landed on my Kindle today. I can’t wait to crack it open and start reading.
The book: The Awakening: AidanAidanTheAwakening-AbbyNiles
The author: Abby Niles
The referring blog: Fangs, Wands and Fairy Dust

How did your most recent book find make its way into your life? Please feel free to share!

Oddball Things I’m In Love With This Summer

Happy August! It’s the final stretch of summer and I’m proud to say my entertainment has been that of the unique and charming. I owe a lot of this to the influence of my twelve-year-old son who spends most of his day imitating a young man named Toby Turner. If you have no idea who he is, it is my mission to change that.

Please see my first exhibit and current guilty pleasure–

Cute, Win, Fail on You Tube: Seal Mermaid Dog

Love TechnicallyNext I have a young man named Sark who’s geeky and he knows it from the smartest, sexiest read of my summer–

Love, Technically by Lynne Silver

Check it out here!

Sometimes your eyes need a break from all the pint-sized viewing of You Tube videos on iPads and so you take a good, old fashioned, large screen TV break and stumble upon a great indy movie you’d otherwise never have known about. Whew, that was a mouthful. Now here’s an eyeful of an endearing, heart-string tugging young man I recently discovered via Showtime–

Tom Sturridge in Waiting For Forever

4 Edward's KillerNothing, and I do mean nothing, tops a visit to my hometown in the summer if you’re looking for Smart and Sexy. And that is all due to the one and only–

San Diego Comic Con

I couldn’t be wrapped up and falling in love with all this off-the-wall stuff at a better time. It’s been great inspiration for the long, lanky sweetheart of my current work in progress, Benny!

That’s it! My perfect oddball summer of discovery in a nutshell. Did you fall in love with something new and unexpected these last couple months? I’d love to hear it. Have a great August, fishy friends!

Casting the Slye Temp Heroes + Dianna Love Giveaway!

Hi fishy friends! (UPDATE-Dianna Love has graciously offered to give away a copy of Last Chance to Run!  Just comment before 10pm ET to be entered!)

Mermaid CarleneHow is everyone doing today?  I hope you are all well and enjoying warm, bounteous waters.   This is my fifth summer living on the east coast and the first time I’ve decided to knuckle up and brave the heat, humidity and thunderstorms by staying put rather than travelling home to San Diego, California.  While I’m proud of the many things being a west coaster has made me–laid back, able to dip into Valley Girl talk in the blink of an eye (Just ask Kerri-Mermaid), and SME (Subject Matter Expert) on rolled tacos, I know the one thing that is a major downfall.  I’m a WEATHER WIMP!  Because of this, many of the activities I’ve planned for myself and the kiddo are going to see all the super hero movies and staying inside writing with the AC while my son watches professional wrestling.  I know it’s not the best summer plan and as soon as we learn to catch our breaths, we’ll venture out more and more.  Until that time, I’ve actually discovered a pretty cool side effect of frequenting AMC theaters and WWE.  I’ve got a ton of heroes to place as the visual stars of all the testosterone flavored romance novels I’m reading this summer.

Have you heard of Dianna Love’s Slye Temp series?  It’s extremely romantic and extremely suspenseful and stock-full of hunky heroes.  I just finished the first in the series, Last Chance to RunLast Chance to Run.  I’ve already cast the Man of Steel, Henry Cavill, as the book’s hero, Zane.  Sorry Dianna if that is not at all who you intended when you wrote this fantastic book but in my mind, Henry fills those boots right up!  I haven’t quite decided who to cast as the second book’s hero, Josh from Nowhere Safe, but I’m thinking someone fearless yet tender.  Perhaps the current WWE champ, John Cena.  Oh, but for the third, I’m set.  The absolute perfect incarnation of Ryder from Honeymoon to Die For is hands down, the man twelve-year-old boys and their moms alike who happen to watch a little too much WWE Raw is the Apex Predator aka The Viper aka Randy Orton.  Love. him.  And thanks to my boy, I’ve even learned Randy’s theme song by heart from when he takes the ring.  I may even adopt it as my own theme song as a writer…”I Hear Voices in my Head.”

So have the summer blockbuster cinema heroes inspired you as you read and visualize your steamy romances?  What are you reading this summer and who would you cast as your favorite book heroes?  Channing, Brad, Jamie, Henry?  Oh, and if you need any info on the WWE guys, I’m your girl 🙂

Happy 4th of July tomorrow friends!

Fishy kisses,

Carlene Mermaid

Guy Day: Firefighter Marcus Swims with the Mermaids!

Someone call 9-1-Fun because we have got a hot one in the lagoon today!  He’s taken ladies, (sorry) but I haven’t laughed this hard or sighed this much in a long time.  Please give your warmest welcome to Marcus, Oklahoma son, Firefighter, and our resident Mer-man for the day!

Marcus

Carlene: Hi Marcus!  Thank you so much for hanging out with us today!  Let’s get right to it!  Please tell us about your decision to become a firefighter and how long you’ve been doing it.

Marcus: Looking back when I was growing up I found myself looking at what was considered to my dad as work yet he never once spoke bad about it. Visiting him at the fire station and seeing the guys act as a family did when at home together was interesting to me for I had friends’ parents complaining of their own work and coworkers. I’m not so sure I chose to be a firefighter; instead the profession chose me. I can’t imagine me doing anything else. I’ve been serving the OCFD (Oklahoma City Fire Department) for seven and one half years and like my dad I can’t recall talking bad about it.

Carlene:  What is something you’ve done and never ever want to do again?

Marcus: Many times people ask how we do what we do and see what we see. I can only answer that from personal experiences. The example is when a call came in to
check the welfare of an individual. Upon arrival it was noted the individual was deceased. This is when the police would normally release us but the funeral home that was servicing the family couldn’t get the body out without help.  Minor detail is that this individual hadn’t been seen for 2 weeks…I’m sure you can fill in the details. We helped remove the deceased and finally were released by the police. During the removal process, as with any horrific scene, I put myself in a sort of emotionless state of mind, however, I could go the rest of my career without assisting in that again.

Carlene:  What is something you’d do all the time if you could?

Marcus:  Firefighters have the opportunity to stress release each in their own ways. Some go to the lake every day off. Some go do the night life scene. Mine is a bit closer to home. I like collecting movies but more importantly I like watching them. I have no favorites cause I watch a movie for how the movie makes me feel. If I need a feel good movie I may watch Rudy or to get pumped up why not the classic Top Gun!

firefighter

Carlene:  Aw, Top Gun!  We knew you belonged here in the pond with us!  But now let’s talk about what scares you and then what is something that might scare others but you feel pretty confident dealing with?

Marcus:  Fear creeps in to every firefighter just not the same fear for each. Some do fear fire (yes…we don’t want to get burned either). Some are scared of dogs that are on scene. My fear so far isn’t anything specific to the job. I can handle the fire, the dogs, and the gun shots that go off while on calls in bad neighborhoods.  I’m ok with the car wrecks that people die in for I know I did all I could to help.  My fear is kissing my wife and boy goodbye in the morning and unable to kiss them hello the next morning.

Carlene:  Thank you for sharing that with us, Marcus.  Very touching.  Now let’s get into fireman fashion.  Is wearing a suit and tie something you look forward to or does it give you the heebie geebies?

Marcus:  People wonder why the fire fighters wear uniforms when we have to put our bunker clothes on half the time. We are proud to be who we are and want to present
ourselves as how we see ourselves. That being said, if the fire department wanted to dress as a used car salesman (no offense if one is reading…you guys do where your ties quite nice) I’m sure we might have to mutiny!

Carlene:  We know a thing or two about mutiny which is why we haven’t invited any of those pesky old pirates to Guy Day.  Now tell us, how much does your gear weigh or better yet, “Wearing my fireman’s gear is like wearing a (blank) on your back”.  (elephant, refrigerator, full grown German Shepard?)

Marcus:  Next time there is an emergency and you see a fire fighter running around in his full bunker gear, with scba on his back, and a tool in his hand and he doesn’t stop and answer your question about what is going on, then here is where I tell you why. No, we are not pricks on scene. Nope we don’t have permission to answer questions in most cases. Once again, no we are not deaf because of the sirens. Answer time! Imagine that a ten year old wants a piggy back ride for two house lengths. Once you get there you realize that the 10 year old forgot his shoes so you run back with him still on your back. There are the shoes, YAYYYY, but while we’re here let’s carry the basketball that he wants and don’t forget the rollerblades he wants later. So off you go two houses down. Woohoo…made it. Now it’s time to rollerblade while playing basketball all while piggy backing a ten year old. That, my friends, is how a fire fighter feels with all his gear on keeping in mind after all the running around getting tools, hoses, and equipment in place he still has a fire to put out or a car to cut open. We don’t answer cause we probably don’t have the ability to!

Marcus

Carlene:  Okay, last one.  Out of these actual romance titles involving a firefighter, please give me your reaction: (example, “made me laugh”, “had me worried”, “I might actually read that”, etc.)

Marcus: Smokin’ Hot Nights – “Has someone been reading my diary?”

Too Hot to Handle – “Going to be a hit when made into Cinemax late night series!”

Firefighter Under the Mistletoe – “I’d buy it as a stocking stuffer for the wife.”

Carlene:  Oh my goodness, loved these!  Marcus, you are truly one brave man and the Mermaids and our readers appreciate all you do.  Thanks for swimming with us today and sharing your perspective.  Show of hands and fins, who wants to dive into a firefighter romance novel right now or better yet, Write One?  Fishy Kisses everyone!Mermaid Carlene

How A Mermaid Discovered Her Super Power…

Mermaid CarlenePsst, yes you fishy friend.  Lean in a little closer because I have a secret to share.  I recently overheard something extraordinary being discussed by King Neptune and his court.  It turns out every mermaid has one magical scale located somewhere on her tail giving her the ability to walk on land and live in water.  Sadly, for her own protection, this wondrous scale’s location remains secret because of the time when mer-people were hunted for their magic.

I, however, had the worst itch my first winter living on the east coast and couldn’t stop scratching at this one particular fold on the underside of my fin.  I nagged at it so much that I loosened a scale.  Not knowing what else to do with it, I tucked it under my pillow that night as if it were a tooth.  Naturally.

Talk about vivid dreams!  There were heroes and heroines, and all kinds of drama and tragedy.

A laugh or two here and there.

A kiss.  Okay, lots of kisses.

And a clock.  A ticking clock with my face for its face!  When I awoke, I was sure I had scratched off “The Scale”.  Yep, the big one.  It would allow me to choose when andMermaid Dreaming where my fins would be exchanged for feet and reminded me that the time is always right when it comes to following your dreams.  And, this scale’s magic revealed my secret super power…

So back I go, with a blush and a grin, to the grotto where I shall delight in writing the Beginning and the End.

For I am a Romance Writer 🙂
