Ask A Mermaid
Music or Silence (while you write)?
Silence is best. Music without words, only when I need a distraction from the ambient noise at coffee shop. (Because, lady, I really don’t care if your wedding DJ is going to play “The Electric Slide” or not.)
What weird food do you like?
Chicken liver, octopus, frogs’ legs, East African hot pepper
What are some of your most irrational fears?
1.) Every time I see a ladder, I imagine myself falling down it.
2.) I hate making phone calls because I am afraid I’m going to interrupt the person during the MOST IMPORTANT moment of their day.
3.) I don’t like wearing my glasses outside the house, because I’m afraid I will get lost in the jungle and be attacked by a bear and lose them. (I *wish* I was kidding about this.)
How many novels/short stories/screenplays/poems/etc have you published?
I lost count a while back. Luckily, we keep a fabulous list here to use as reference!
How much do you write every day?
On a perfect day, 1000 words. Not every day is perfect.
How much do you WISH you could write every day?
100,000 words…and still have time in the day leftover to record YouTube videos, and narrate an audiobook, and make art…
If you could write like one author, who would it be?
Meredith Ann Pierce, Robin McKinley, and Diana Wynne Jones…er…mixed together.
If you could be one superhero, or have one superpower, who/what would it be?
I *am* a superhero: The Incredible Whirlwind of Beauty & Dynamite (a.k.a. “The Whirlwind” or “Whirly Girl”). I am a member of the League of Unextroardinary Gentlepersons. I’m still waiting for my power over gravity. So far my only powers are Contagious Emotions and Making Lines Longer Once I’m Standing In Them. (Lame, right?)
If you could be on any reality TV show, what would it be?
The Magical Adventures of Princess Alethea
What are some of the coolest things you’ve ever done?
Starred in a local PBS miniseries when I was 8. Climbed to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Helped make a horror movie (or two). Got my first big publishing contract by accident.
Name three things on your List of Things to Do Before You Die.
1.) Go up in a Hot Air Balloon
2.) Celebrate Guy Fawkes Day in England
3.) Flush the toilet in the Southern Hemisphere
(You can find the rest of my list here.)
