Madeline Dyer Swims with the Mermaids!

Hi Madeline! Welcome to the Waterworld mermaids! I’ve read your first book, Untamed, and absolutelyfragmented1400 loved it. I am soooo looking forward to reading Fragmented, which releases in a few short days on September 7!

We’re absolutely thrilled to have you here, and we hope you enjoy splashing in our lagoon!

Thanks so much for having me!

1. Can you tell us a little bit about Untamed and Fragmented?

Sure! Untamed and Fragmented are books one and two in my dystopian fantasy series (the Untamed Series), about addiction, betrayal, and loyalty.

Untamed begins in a world where an estimated 95% of the population are addicted to chemical augmenters that only allow them to feel positive emotions. These ‘Enhanced Ones’ believe it is their duty to ‘save’ the remaining people—the Untamed—from the fear and anger that is within them, and thus make society a safer place. And the Enhanced Ones will stop at nothing in their quest to convert all the remaining Untamed. The problem is that augmenters, while preventing a person from feeling anything negative, also destroy a person’s humanity; mankind is becoming more and more robotic, and full of artificiality. And, if the Enhanced Ones get their way, there’ll be no natural, Untamed humans left.

Our main character, seventeen-year-old Seven Sarr, is one of the last Untamed humans in the world, and as a powerful Seer she soon discovers that she alone has the power to save one race. But, after being kidnapped and converted by her enemy, Seven discovers that the Enhanced Ones’ lifestyle might not be as bad as she was led to believe… Torn between two worlds, Seven must work out who she really wants to be, and decide which side she will fight to save—a difficult feat, given that she’s already becoming addicted to the Enhanced Ones’ augmenters.

Book two, Fragmented, continues Seven’s story as an elusive Untamed tribe offer her refuge and safety from the Enhanced Ones. But the Zharat tribe’s lifestyle is a far cry from what Seven’s used to, and with the Enhanced still out there, nowhere can really be safe for her. Least of all when she discovers that everyone has a hidden agenda. The secrets and lies just keep getting bigger—and then there’s also an arranged marriage thrown into the mix too, when the Zharat demand that Seven must marry into their tribe. If she doesn’t, she’ll die. And, without her, the Untamed cannot win the war.

2. What inspired you to write these books?

The idea for Untamed’s premise came to me when I saw the music video for “La La La” by Naughty Boy ft. Sam Smith. It was the scene about halfway through where what appears to be a human heart is being sold at a market, and I just started thinking about all the things a heart could represent: love, lust, desire, etc. And then I wondered, What if these emotions could be bought at a market, just as easily as one buys food? And thus the idea for the Enhanced Ones was born…

untamed-23. Will there be a third book, or does the series end with this second book? What are you working on?

There’ll be four books! I’m currently working on Divided, book three in the Untamed Series, and I am just so excited. Aside from this, I’m also working on a standalone dystopian and editing a multiple-POV thriller about a girl’s abduction.

4. These books are YA dystopian, which is one of my favorite genres. Can you tell us how you decided to write in this genre, and will you continue to do so? What are some of your favorite YA Dystopians?

Untamed was the fourth full-length manuscript I completed, but it actually started off as a bit of an experiment and was my first foray into writing dystopian fiction! Before then I’d only written urban fantasy and science fiction (both of which I long to return to!). But I’d always wanted to write a YA dystopian, and as soon as an idea had begun to form, I sat down and began writing to see what happened. And I soon discovered that I absolutely loved writing the genre as much as I loved reading it!

I’ve currently outlining another dystopian series at the moment, so I really hope to keep writing in this genre.

Some of my favorite YA dystopians include Teri Terry’s Slated, Moira Young’s Blood Red Road, and, of course, Veronica Roth’s Divergent and Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games.

5. How did you start writing?

I’ve always wanted to be a writer—the desire’s always been there. Once, at school when I was about seven or eight we were allowed to write stories in class, and then the next day we had to type them up on the computer. As I typed mine, I kept changing stuff and writing new scenes, taking other stuff out, and I never finished typing it up as we only had a couple of hours to do it in. But it was then that I really realized that I wanted—needed—to be a writer.

And I kept writing stories. First about fairies, and then about the wild ponies that lived on the moors near my house. But, not all my teachers were very encouraging about my dream. I distinctively remember one of them, when I was about fourteen, telling me I’d be better suited to being a carpet fitter instead. Yeah. I know.

After that, I began being more secretive about my writing. But I wanted to prove that I could do it. Aged sixteen, I began sending off my fantasy short stories, and a couple of months later, I got my first acceptance letter. My debut short story, “The Silent Siren”, appeared in issue three of Iron Bound Magazine. And, in the three or four years that followed, I had about fifteen more short stories published—online, in ezines, and print and ebook anthologies—by Mirror Dance Fantasy Magazine, NonBinary Review, and Mad Swirl, to name a few.

During that time, I also began to focus more on novel-length manuscripts as full-length stories were my first love. I completed my first novel (a 137,000 urban fantasy manuscript that is still in my drawer) when I was seventeen. And I completed the first draft of the manuscript which became my debut novel, Untamed, when I was eighteen. A year later, and I had four offers on the table for it, and signed with Prizm Books, the YA imprint of Torquere Press. But it was only when Untamed released a year later, when I was twenty, that I began to really think of myself as a writer.

6. You’re quite young to be a published author, which I find amazing and impressive. Can you tell us about some of the challenges you face as a younger writer?

Thank you! I think the main challenge I’ve experienced with being a young writer is that a small portion of readers don’t take me seriously—or they think that my work got selected because of my age and not because of my writing. I’ve had people message me out of the blue before telling me that my work (which they haven’t read) can’t possibly be any good and that they’d never buy it because I’m young. Those comments can hurt a bit, and make me doubt myself, but I try to remind myself that when I was querying my short stories and Untamed, I never told the publishers my age until after the contracts had been signed—if I even told them at all!

On the other hand, I’ve had other authors message me saying that my age is a bonus because I’m writing for a YA readership and I’m pretty close to that audience still. So, I think of my age as both a blessing and a curse!

Thank you soooo much for joining us!

Thank you!

Untamed (Untamed Series #1)

As one of the last Untamed humans left in the world, Seven’s life has always been controlled by tight rules. Stay away from the Enhanced. Don’t question your leader. And, most importantly, never switch sides–because once you’re Enhanced there’s no going back. Even if you have become the perfect human being.
But after a disastrous raid on an Enhanced city, Seven soon finds herself in her enemy’s power. Realizing it’s only a matter of time before she too develops a taste for the chemical augmenters responsible for the erosion of humanity, Seven knows she must act quickly if she’s to escape and save her family from the same fate.
Yet, as one of the most powerful Seers that the Untamed and Enhanced have ever known, Seven quickly discovers that she alone holds the key to the survival of only one race. But things aren’t clear-cut anymore, and with Seven now questioning the very beliefs she was raised on, she knows she has an important choice to make. One that has two very different outcomes.
Seven must choose wisely whose side she joins, for the War of Humanity is underway, and Death never takes kindly to traitors.

Genre: YA Sci-Fi

Sixteen-year-old Jessa Stone is the most valuable citizen in Eden City. Her psychic abilities could lead to significant scientific discoveries, if only she’d let TechRA study her. But ten years ago, the scientists kidnapped and experimented on her, leading to severe ramifications for her sister, Callie. She’d much rather break into their labs and sabotage their research—starting with Tanner Callahan, budding scientist and the boy she loathes most at school.

The past isn’t what she assumed, though—and neither is Tanner. He’s not the arrogant jerk she thought he was. And his research opens the door to the possibility that Jessa can rectify a fatal mistake made ten years earlier. She’ll do anything to change the past and save her sister—even if it means teaming up with the enemy she swore to defeat.

With the help of her childhood crush, Logan, a boy she hasn’t spoken to in five years, she escapes the hellish prison.

But on the run from her future, as well as the government, Callie sets in motion a chain of events that she hopes will change her fate. If not, she must figure out how to protect her sister from the biggest threat of all—Callie, herself.

“The mother I knew would never do those things.

But maybe I never knew her after all.”

Clothes, jokes, coded messages…Cecilia Brooks and her mom shared everything. At least, CeCe thought they did. Six months ago, her mom killed herself after accusations of having sex with a student, and CeCe’s been the subject of whispers and taunts ever since. Now, at the start of her high school senior year, between dealing with her grieving, distracted father, and the social nightmare that has become her life, CeCe just wants to fly under the radar. Instead, she’s volunteering at the school’s crisis hotline—the same place her mother worked.

As she counsels troubled strangers, CeCe’s lingering suspicions about her mom’s death surface. With the help of Sam, a new student and newspaper intern, she starts to piece together fragmented clues that point to a twisted secret at the heart of her community. Soon, finding the truth isn’t just a matter of restoring her mother’s reputation, it’s about saving lives—including CeCe’s own…

Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Excerpt from The Darkest Lie

“I’ve been researching the story of her suicide,” Sam says. “And I came across something in my research that nobody could explain.”

“What is it?” I say dully, even though I can probably guess. I mean, there’s lots that’s inexplicable about my mom’s behavior. Tons.

Like: How could a grown woman be sexually attracted to a boy? Or more importantly: Why would she act on it? And my personal favorite: Did she have any kind of moral fiber—even a few lost threads—at all?

But Sam bypasses all the obvious questions and picks up a lock of my hair. I feel the slight tug all the way to my roots.

“Her hair.” He rubs my strands between his fingers, and I suppress a shiver. “It was chopped off, jagged. One article said it looked like it was lopped off with a butcher knife.”

I shrug, but even that simple movement is infused with the awareness of his touch. Still, he doesn’t let go.

“They said she was crazy,” I say. “Out of her mind. Maybe she was disfiguring herself as a sign of her shame. Who knows what motivated her actions?”

But even as I repeat the explanation the detectives gave for just about everything, my dad’s words echo in my mind: I knew your mother. She wasn’t capable of those things. I don’t believe she did any of it.

All of a sudden, my excuses sound exactly like what they are—easy, surface-level assumptions designed to make it easier for the detectives to close the case.

Sam frowns. “I guess I could buy that if I hadn’t seen the interview with her hair stylist in one of the local papers.”

Oh. One of those. Every newspaper in a fifty-mile radius went berserk when my mom committed suicide. Every day, there was a new article, featuring interviews with her fellow teachers, former students, even our lawn guy, for god’s sake. If there was a story on her hair salon, I must’ve missed it.

“The stylist kept saying your mom’s haircut was inconceivable, and I couldn’t understand why. So when I was scooting past Cut & Dry the other day, I stopped to talk to her.”

“Did she confirm my mom was a natural redhead?” I raise my eyebrows. “Reveal the exact color of dye she used to cover her silver sparkles?”

“Not at all,” he says, and something about his tone stops me. The chill begins at the base of my spine and crawls its way up, one long spider leg at a time. “The stylist said she’s been cutting your mom’s hair for two decades. And in all that time, your mother never let her cut more than half an inch. In fact, she came into the salon two days before she died, and they had the exact same argument. The stylist tried to talk her into a bob, and your mom adamantly refused.”

Abruptly, he lets go of my hair, and the strands swing back over my shoulder, loose, unencumbered, and very, very cold.

Sam’s eyes pierce right into me. “So what I want to know is: What could’ve happened in two days that made her change her mind? Unless . . . she didn’t.”

An excerpt from Race the Darkness:
No way was he going to die running. He stopped, turned and faced the truck barreling toward them. The tires ate up the ground at an indecent rate. He clutched Isleen tighter to his chest. For her sake, he wanted it to be a quick death. No more lingering. No more pain.

That thought infuriated him. None of this was right. They shouldn’t be on the verge of death. Again.

The truck kept coming—twenty-five feet.

Everything slowed, happened as if through the quicksand of time. A white dandelion floaty meandered on the breeze directly between them and the truck. His heart no longer ran a staccato rhythm. Duh…duhm. Pause. Duh…duhm. Pause.

His life didn’t flash before his eyes. The future did. Isleen’s future. In an ethereal dream beyond time, her skin was gilded by firelight, her eyes void of sadness and fear, her body whole and healthy. She smiled, an expression so full of warmth and tenderness and undiluted joy that it plunked itself down inside his heart and wouldn’t leave.

He ached to create that kind of smile on her face, but their lives were over and it all could’ve gone so differently if he’d only listened to her, believed in her, found her years before now.

Excerpt from THE DARKEST LIE

It’s time to view the body. Family first.

Well, technically, me first. There was always only three of us in the nuclear unit, and Dad’s been locked in the den for the past seventy-two hours. I’ve only seen him once, when he shuffled upstairs like a pajama-clad zombie and asked me if I’d eaten.

That was it: Did you eat?

Not: I prefer the cherry wood casket. Or: Let me make your grandma’s travel arrangements. Or even: I know this was Mom’s favorite dress, but isn’t the neckline a little…low?

Did I eat?

Yes, Dad. I had soup from the can and microwaved pizza rolls and a bowl of cereal. The food sloshes in my stomach now as I walk down the runner to the casket I picked out because of its mauve tint.

Calla lilies pile in urns around the viewing room, and the air-conditioning wars with the sweat along my hairline. My mom smiles at me from a portrait erected behind the casket. Her eyes are hesitant and a little wary, as if she knew, somehow, some way, she would wind up here. Lifeless. Pumped full of formaldehyde. About to be gawked at by a town full of gossips.

This was only going to end one of two ways—with Tabitha Brooks dead or in jail. I never thought I’d say this, but I’d give anything to see my mother behind bars.

I wade through the dense, chilly air and stop a few feet from the body. Behind me, my grandmother and aunt sit, a box of tissues between them, blowing their noses like it’s a sport.

“Look at our Cecilia,” Gram sniffs. “So brave. Not a single tear shed.”

If she only knew. I’m not brave. Fifteen minutes ago, I was retching into the toilet bowl. Five minutes from now, when the doors open for the visitation, I’ll be long gone, leaving Gram to shake people’s hands and deal with the bit lips, the knowing eyebrows, that inevitable speaking-in-a-funeral-parlor whisper. I can hear the titters: “Is it true? Tabitha’s heart stopped while she was boffing the high school quarterback? Why, she must’ve been twenty years his senior!”

Twenty-three years, to be exact, and a high school English teacher to boot. But she didn’t actually die during sex. Instead, a few days after Tommy Farrow came forward with their affair, my mother took her own life.

What could be a clearer admission of guilt? She might as well have been caught in the act. The investigation was shut down before it even began.

I take a shuddering breath. Two more minutes. A hundred and twenty seconds and then I can leave. I steel my shoulders and walk the final steps to my mother’s body.

Oh god. It’s even worse than I thought.

The room whirls around me, and nausea sprints up my throat. My hands shoot out to grab the casket, stopping short of actually touching the corpse.

This . . . this thing . . . can’t be my mother. She never smiled like that, all serene and peaceful-like. She never wore this much makeup; her red hair was never chopped so closely to her head. My mother was chaos and passion, devastation and joy. Dad used to say you could reach deep into her eyes and pull out a song.

Well, her eyes are closed now, and I’m not sure there’ll be any music in my life, ever again.

Quintessentially Me: Katherine Fleet

Hi everyone! I am Katherine Fleet, debut author of The Secret to Letting Go, releasing from Entangled Teen on Feb 1, 2016. For this guest post, I was asked to pick one thing in my house and talk about its history and what it means to me. There are so many things in my house that I love and have meaning to me, but I’ve decided to pick something a little quirky – my fridge magnets!

I’ve always loved to travel, but for many years, my husband and I weren’t in a position to get very far. Then we moved to the Caribbean eight years ago and found ourselves able to really travel. Since we’ve lived here, we’ve been to many parts of the US, as well as Ireland, England, Scotland, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. When we started travelling, I knew I needed to collect something from each of our trips. Of course there are pictures, but I wanted something that I could see every day. So I picked fridge magnets!

Here is why they are “quintessentially me”:

  • I love to bake, so I see them everyday when I am in the kitchen.
  • I try to pick pretty designs, but in reality they are just a little bit tacky (yes, I bought the celebrity homes guide map when we were in Beverly Hills and drove around in a minivan full of kids to stop in front of the gates of all the star’s homes and gawk).
  • They’re small and economical to buy, so in other words, a very practical souvenir. This is very much me – a very practical person.
  • My husband and three children have started to bring them home to me from their travels. So, when I see them, I think of my family, which is the most important thing in the world to

katherine-fleetAuthor Bio:

Originally from Newfoundland, Katherine Fleet gave up the cold winters of Eastern Canada for the year round warmth of the Caribbean. The slower pace of island life has given her time to pursue a long-time goal—becoming an author. When she’s not writing, she spends her time baking, chauffeuring her three amazing, talented kids around, and having sun-filled adventures with her husband and wonderful friends in Curaçao. She is also a very thankful breast cancer survivor. In 2007, she joined RWA and has enjoyed the support and camaraderie of the YARWA and OIRWA writing communities. She’s participated in NaNoWriMo since 2012 and is an active supporter of the associated Young Writers Program. She is represented by super-agent Carrie Pestritto of Prospect Agency. The Secret to Letting Go is her debut novel. You can connect with her at www.KatherineFleet.com.

Trouble is, she’s hard to ignore, with her beautiful piercing eyes, pitiful-looking dog, and unsettling tendency of finding trouble. Clover Scott lived her whole life off the grid and arrives on the Gulf coast in search of her grandparents. She never expected to nearly drown, or get caught in a hurricane, or fall in love with the boy who rescues her. Now, she has a chance to rewrite her life’s story, to finally fit in somewhere, but Daniel wants answers about her past. When the police start asking questions about the disappearance of her parents, she must make a choice: go to jail or confess her secrets—even if they might destroy her chance at a happily-ever-after.

Quintessentially Me: Pat Esden

Today, I am thrilled to welcome debut author and good friend, Pat Esden, to the pond. Her wonderful NA, A HOLD ON ME, which I had the distinct honor of reading releases into the world on February 23.
In the meantime, Pat is joining us to answer our mermaid prompt of the month:

Pick one thing in your house/apartment/writing space and discuss its history and what it means to you and how it is “Quintessentially You”?

Take it away, Pat!

I’m a collector and antique dealer and my house is filled with keepsakes, so picking one thing that quintessentially represents me wasn’t easy. I decided on a dollhouse that my oldest sister’s first husband built for me. It was made it: the likeness of my family’s camp where I spent a large part of my childhood.

DSC00843
Camp was a place where I daydreamed and playacted, heard stories around campfires, and discovered creepy old fairytales in tattered schoolbooks. The dollhouse itself also played a role in my imaginings—as did the troll who’s looking out the window.

This photo is of five-year-old me standing in the doorway of the camp.
