Thirteen is Always Lucky! (If you want it to be)

I’m going to follow up on my Mer-Sis’s wonderful post on 12-12-12 and go for 12-13-12. *Waving fin madly at Mer-Sis Kim 🙂 *

Yes, the dreaded 13! (At least to some.)

I’ve always tried to be the one who looked at the glass half-full, not half-empty. When my friends would cringe at the thought of Friday the 13th (other than the movies), I would shrug and pet my black cat curled up in my lap.

Well my friends, this is Thursday the 13th–so no fear there at all, unless you don’t like the number 13 in general.  To me the number represented a ‘baker’s dozen’–one more number past twelve, a little extra ‘something’…or just another day.

So unless you have Triskaidekaphobia, the fear of the number 13, treat this day as you would any other.

I intend to embrace this day by doing some of my favorite things:

  • Waking up at 4:13 this morning (yes I did! Freaky or what?)
  • Having a cup or two of my vanilla bean latte 😉 (If I have 13 cups–someone better peel me off of the ceiling)
  • Writing at least 1300 words to my new WIP
  • Hugging my DD’s at least 13 times each (nope–they don’t get annoyed)
  • Going through 13 emails (at least!)
  • Answering 13 emails–depends on who they are from and the topic
  • Having at least 13 Cheerios in my bowl of cereal this morning
  • Texting hubby 13 times–just to be annoying!  (Mwwwahhhhaaahhhhh)
  • Adding an extra cookie to each batch of cookies I bake today (there is that Baker’s Dozen I told you about earlier)
  • Play 13 games of Free Cell on my smart phone while waiting for people today (picking up DD from school, running errands, appointments, etc.)
  • Send out 13 Christmas Cards.
  • Say hello to 13 Mermaids (including me)–Hi My Mermaid sisters!!  🙂
  • And…have 13 things to do on my list today!

What do you plan to do with “13” today?

  1. Thirteen is always a lucky number in my house! Today is my husband’s birthday – 12/13 – and we both went to Colgate University, where 13 is THE number. Good things happen on and with 13s 😉

    1. KatieO,
Thanks for stopping in! I was actually reading about Colgate University and the Lucky 13 this morning!! Happy Birthday to your hubby, too!

      “13” Rocks! 😀

  2. Good morning Loni! Today is also my step-mom’s birthday so it’s for sure gonna be about celebrating. I love your 13 list. I have to say, I’ve got this killer need to know more about your beloved vanilla bean lattes! Do you make them at home? Do you pick them up at the local coffee/tea cafe? Do you whip them up in one of those fancy coffee makers? Exactly how many of them does Loni Mermaid consume in a morning on average? Do you top with whipped cream? Nutmeg? Cinnamon? Chocolate dust? Marshmallows? How long does it take you to sip down a cup? Do you ever toast them with the family or is this a strictly Loni Mermaid vanilla bean latte tradition? Do you drink them from a special mug? Is it the same mug everyday?
I think those are the 13 most burning questions I have about your infamous vanilla bean lattes 🙂

    1. Actually Carlene, I have a small can of General Foods International Coffee to thank–can I say that here without trademark? They are simple and delicious. It’s my favorite flavor of theirs but I can only find it in my store lately (I stock up on them).
As to how many I consume–anywhere between two-four a day but mostly in the morning. I do a tea break in the afternoon. And yes, I have a special Irish Cafe-style mug (I have 6 of them so I don’t use the same one every day).
I toast my friends (as you know) but this is just my little tradition.
And as the famous Paul Harvey used to say…”And now you know the rest of the story.” 😉

      1. Yay! Thank you for spilling the beans on this…I’ve been curious for so long 😉 I”m gonna have to look for that next trip to the store. Then I’ll toast one to you. 🙂 Cheers!

        1. They have different flavors–make sure it says Vanilla Bean “Latte”– the French Vanilla is okay but I really like the latte.
          Cheers to you, Sis! 🙂

  3. Loni, I love your list. Thank you for this post — I have just decided to have another lucky day. (Because we make our own luck, right?) So that makes two lucky days in a row!

How about this? We mermaids (and our friends in the pond) should aim to have 13 lucky days in a row. If we start counting from yesterday, that means every day from now until Christmas will be a lucky one! How awesome would that be?

    Okay, who’s in?

      1. Yay, Carlene! I’m serious about this idea. In fact, I will email you (and whoever else) every morning to remind you to have a lucky day!

  4. Love the positive attitude, Loni-Mermaid! 13 is one of my favorite numbers so I tend to embrace it as well. Today is our work holiday party so I’m going to have 13 glasses of wine! Just kidding! But I might have 13 cookies. 😉

  5. Never gave thirteen much thought. My great uncle loved to bet on the horses. He was a number master. We were all assigned numbers to bet. I still use his theory and it works.

  6. Hopefully “13” is a good one for you today, Mary Jo. I don’t know much about number theories but do you still have the number he assigned you? Or did it change depending on the race?

  7. Loni,
This is so cute and funny. 🙂 My daughter Kaitlin was born on the 13th of June. She’s the kid in my family who is afraid of everything…can’t walk down the hallway by herself…can’t watch spooky movies…imagines all kinds of things in her closet…THAT one! LOL. But the funny thing is that she loves the number 13, especially Friday the 13th. She thinks it’s lucky. Her 13th birthday will fall on Friday the 13th of June, and she wants to have the biggest party. She’s already planning, and it’s more than a year away.
I also like the number 13. Not as much as Kaitlin, but I do like it. My favorite number is 33, but I think drinking 33 vanilla bean lattes would be even worse than drinking 13. My other favorite number is 3. That would be much better for drinking caffeine.
I’m in with Pintip, too. Let’s all shoot for 13 lucky days in a row.
