Golden Heart

Congratulations to Golden Heart finalist, Kimberly MacCarron!

WOW. What a thrilling morning. I am still breathless with the excitement of watching all those names roll in. Many, many mermaid friends have been nominated for RWA’s Golden Heart® and RITA® awards. We would like to extend a hearty, fin-flapping congratulations to all the nominees!

In particular, we in the lagoon are absolutely ecstatic that one of our own mermaids, Kimberly MacCarron, has been nominated for a Golden Heart, with her excellent manuscript, MAPPING FATE, in the Paranormal category.

This is Kim’s FIFTH nomination. (!!!)

Congratulations, Kim! WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!

Deals with the Universe

In a little over a week, calls will be going out to notify writers of their finalist status in RWA’s RITA® and Golden Heart® contests. At this very moment, hundreds — if not thousands — of writers are fixated on a certain date, even as they try desperately to pintip-mermaid-300x231ignore it.

March 26. March 26. March 26.

I know this obsession well. Although I’m not entered this year, I was in the running for the previous three years. The wait and anticipation and nerves were nothing short of exquisite torture. What is unique about this “call” is that you know exactly when it’s coming — or not coming. The countdown to Call Day was enough to make me jump out of my skin.

That is, until fellow mermaid, Kimberly MacCarron, taught me a method for waiting. Now, Kim is brilliant for a number of things, but this may be her most brilliant idea yet. It’s called “Deals with the Universe,” and…

Golden Heart and Rita nominees, oh my!

SusanMermaidFriends, this is the LAST DAY in 2014 when RWA members will be in the dark. Yes, tomorrow is The Day for the announcement of Golden Heart and Rita finalists!

Hi, Rita! <3

Since you all know I’m incredibly helpful in dealing with anxiety (first lie), I offer these ideas (gleaned from the incredible brains of the young men I teach).

– play video games – watch movies – go to the gym – play sports – listen to music – lock yourself in a dark room and avoid talking (really!) – get your guitar and rock out – there is no such thing as anxiety in my world (yes, he really said that)

This, as opposed to the usual stress ideas I see on other blog posts, which usually I include references to cookies, ice cream and alcohol consumption.

Also, I have two family members…

4 Questions for Eloisa James

NY Times best selling author, Eloisa James sat down with me at a conference at McDaniel’s College.  She gave advice for new writers, told me about her family, her career, and discussed genre fiction versus literature as well as her latest book, The Duke is Mine.  What a treat!  I couldn’t wait to share this with you readers and all my sisters in the mermaid pond.  Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Thank you Eloisa.

Hugs!

Diana Belchase

UPDATE:  Eloisa James is on vacation in a remote area, but she’s going to try to find a place with service this afternoon and stop by.  So, remember to check back later.  Thanks for visiting!  (Remember, to leave a comment just hit the word COMMENTS under the date at the top of the page in the left margin.)

In this first interview, Eloisa gives some sage advice…

Going for the Gold — Again

This is my first post for Waterworld Mermaids.  Since we’re celebrating our first year anniversary, you might well ask, where have you been all this time?  Was something fishy going on in the Mermaid Pond? So here are the possibilities.

Diana Mermaid was:

a.  Sitting around eating bonbons?  (The completely delicious, fat-free ones that never add an ounce of weight)

b.  Traveling around the world with a really cute and rich guy? (Imagine castles in France, the casino at Monte Carlo, the Yacht moored off of Mykonos.  <sigh>)

c.  Leaving all the work to her sister mermaids (because she is as prolific a writer as Nora Roberts and just didn’t have time)?

d. Late to the original meeting where the mermaids met, didn’t sign in, and thus didn’t get an invitation, until just recently, to join?

Anyone who knows me, will guess, yup, she was late — which I really, really try not to be.  But I’m here now, and letting out a great big SQUEE!!!  I have enjoyed every…
