Kerri’s Favorite Things

This post is just like Oprah’s favorite things episode. Except, it’s not on TV. And no one’s getting a car. And there are no people dressed as elves passing out all of my favorite things. And most of my favorite things aren’t really tangible so you kinda couldn’t get them anyway.

But other than that, it’s totally just like Oprah’s favorite things.

I love the holidays and thought I would share some of my most favorite things about it. Of course, there are a lot of aspects I don’t like about the holidays as well. Stress, spending money, stress, the song Christmas Shoes, stress… You get the idea. But that’s a whole other blog post…

In the meantime, please enjoy Kerri’s Favorite Things!  The Diva Kerr-ina

Made-for-TV Holiday Movies

You know what I’m talking about – all the TV movies that air on Lifetime and Hallmark channel. Love, love, love them. And why wouldn’t I? They’re just like category romance novels! No matter who died, who has cancer, if it can’t snow in California, someone loses their job, secret baby, talking dog who saves Christmas, step parents, adopted parents, half parents, presents stolen, Santa has amnesia, Santa retires, Santa and Mrs. Claus are on the rocks, Mrs. Claus escapes the North Pole, the elves escape and end up in Vegas – WHATEVER! They all have a satisfying happy ending. Perfect!

Christmas Music

Besides Christmas Shoes (see above)… and, okay besides I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas, Little Drummer Boy, Daffy Duck singing Blue Christmas, anyone singing Blue Christmas, people who think My Favorite Things is a Christmas song (IT’S NOT!), and that song that starts with, “Met my lover in the grocery store…” I REALLY love Christmas music. It makes me happy. In fact, if I’m having a really bad day in July, I just blast All I Want for Christmas or the Chipmunks Song and I’m good to go.

Getting Fat

No, technically, I don’t like getting fat. But I do love, love, love the food I eat in December. My family does our own take on the Italian Feast of the Seven Fishes. This is my favorite food of the whole year. Lots of yummy fish, cheesy stuff, salty goodness and carbs. Who wouldn’t like that? It’s also one of the only times during the year that I bake, and my cookies are amazeballs. Ask my biased family members.

Sparkles!

I love anything that sparkles, glitters or lights up in the night. I’m very cat-like in that way. In December, it’s on. Lights in trees, around houses, shrubs, fireplaces. Sparkly sweaters, earrings and light-up headpieces. The more the better, I always say. However, what I do not like is mixture of lights. Pick one, people. You’re either doing white lights or multi-colored lights. Your choice. Although… if you put enough up and get really, really gaudy, I’ll probably forgive you. Can’t say the same thing for my corneas.

So that’s my list. I wish a very happy, merry, awesomesauce, glittertastic, amazeballs Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza to you and your family!

What are some of your favorite things? Tell me in the comments. But you’re still not getting a car!

  1. Sparkles and Chipmunks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s so you!!!!!!!!!!!! One of my favorite things is my car. Her name is Fancy and she has eyelashes. If I could figure out how to adorn her with colorful sparkly Christmas lights this time of year, I would! She gets us where we need to go safely and wouldn’t you know…her favorite music to play is Casey James and Depeche Mode. She’s a keeper! (Of course the really important things to me are the people I love but you inspire me to be silly, which I also really love!) Merry Christmas Kerri xoxoxo

  2. What a nice post, Kerri! It is so important to celebrate the good things in life. One of my favorite things? Snow! Lounging in pajamas, building snowmen, drinking hot chocolate, the glee on my kids’ faces, a crackling fire, the world so beautiful and white…

  3. I love your favorite things!! Mine center around family and friends. I love snowy mornings, when everything is clean and white, I love going to or staying in to watch Holiday Classics (thank you Kerri for introducing me to White Christmas, which I saw for the first time last year), Christmas lights, carols and of course the cookies! Happy Holidays to everyone!

  4. I believe you were referring to the song “Same Old Lang Syne” – my favorite Christmas song!!! 🙂 Its sad and sweet…come on. I actually hate holiday movies LOL. Mainly because growing up I watched the Brady Bunch Christmas movie about 500 times and I am just scarred for life now when it comes to Christmas movies 😉 I think I really love the gift giving. Once you have kids – I mean shopping for them and seeing their excitement. It’s corny but true – it really makes my Christmas. Now I am going to walk by your office playing “Christmas Shoes.” Enjoy :)!!

  5. Update: Aimee did walk by my office playing Christmas Shoes. Then I threw up in my mouth a little. That song should be banned! And that stupid “Same Old Lang Syne” song. Hahaha!

  6. That can ban “Christmas Shoes” as long as they take “Do They Know It’s Christmas in Africa” with it. I mean it’s the desert. So no they problably don’t know it’s Christmas… ay yi yi 😉

  7. I love 7 fishes and can’t wait to do it Carpenter-style again this year!! Love this post as it reminds me of all of the reasons to love the season, and despite the inevitable stress, there are some favorite things we get to have just once a year:)

  8. I love all the things that Kerri loves….hmmmmm could there be a connection!!! I love decorating the house, inside and out. My husband says that I don’t like change and keep everything forever..but I do make changes, I just don’t get rid of anything! I play Christmas music nonstop and always have a Christmas movie on. I love the shopping and all my ‘lists’; the baking and good food. I love having my children home. I love the company, especially those who visit us in their PJs! Happy Holidays to all!!!

  9. Aimee, I feel the same way about the Band Aid/Feed the World song. “There won’t be snow in Africa this Christmas”…duh, it’s too close to the equator. My favorite things: snow, hot chocolate, cookies, baking, shopping, music, lights, tree trimming, reading xmas books, holiday movies, Nutcracker, ugly Xmas sweaters and spending time with family and friends. Merry Christmas, everyone!!

  10. You guys are getting me sooooo in the mood for Christmas – can’t wait!!! Thanks for stopping by and commenting, everyone!!

  11. Kerri, I might just have to rethink this friendship if you’re going to disrespect Dan Fogelberg. He is The Man, as far as this 70s babe is concerned, and it’s one of my faves, too! But I do have to agree with the Africa song – bleh. And can I say that I don’t like that Hanukkah song? That one by what’s-his-name? Okay. I never heard the Shoes song, must check YouTube.

Wait! After years and YEARS without lights, I bought new lights for our tree! Missy is going to put them on when we get it out of the attic. She said it was “depressing” to have a not-lit tree. (I thought it was “tidy” and “sane” – silly me). I also like that I bought TWO Christmas presents today! Online!
