Kieran Kramer Interview

Today we are joined by the fabulous, Kieran Kramer. Kieran is a double RITA finalist and a USA Today Best-selling author of light-hearted Regency Historical Romance for St. Martin’s Press. In addition to writing wonderful, fun, engaging stories with memorable characters, Kieran is a former CIA employee, a journalist and an English teacher who enjoys karaoke and has appeared on multiple game shows.

Kieran is well known for her Impossible Bachelor Series and will be releasing Loving Lady Marcia, the first book in the House of Brady Series on August 28th.

I hope everyone enjoys the video interview. Kieran and I had a blast making it despite a few technical glitches – all my fault, of course. To make it easier to view, I’ve divided it up into 6 to 14 minute segments you can see by following the links. Enjoy!

Thank you again for joining us here today, Kieran. You are a joy to be around and I wish you the best of luck with your latest release, Loving Lady Marcia!

  1. Dana is such a trooper!! She slogged through learning this program–and I am so impressed!!!! It was a lot of fun. Thanks so much for having me, Waterworld Mermaids!! I love you ladies!!!

  2. Thanks so much for being with us today, Kieran! As always, you are as lovely as lovely can be! Great questions, Dana! Thanks for all of your hard work!

  3. Thanks for joining us today Kieran! Glad to hear everyone is enjoying the interview. 🙂

  4. Diana, I used a program called ecamm to record a call on Skype, then edited in iMovie (I am a Mac user) and when everything was finalized I uploaded to Youtube and linked the URL to the slide images I made using a photo for a background.

  5. I have to admit that I was only going to watch one of the segments while I had my morning coffee. But now my coffee is cold, and I’ve watched all three. LOL. I’m so glad I watched all of them because I love what Kieran said about fear of failure and freeing yourself. That’s exactly what I needed to hear. So, I’ll make sure my foundation to the story is strong, and I’ll let it go. 🙂
Kieran, I loved that story about cleaning those bricks for the fireplace. I bet every time you saw them, it brought back such a great memory.
If I had ever had a sister, I would have wanted one exactly like you. 🙂 And I would have been working in that pub with you, dating a friend of your Scottsman. LOL. If you ever need a travel buddy to Galway, remember, I’m your long lost sister.
Thanks for swimming with us, Kieran. As always, it’s such a pleasure!
Dana, great, great interview! You did such a great job.

  6. Thanks for swimming with us today, Kieran! I haven’t forgotten how kind you were at Nationals, and I’m pushing pushing pushing to finish that draft!

  7. OMG – I’m so mad! I only got to watch one video before leaving for EDJ! Stupid work!

Dana-Mermaid, great job! Can’t wait to watch the other videos when I leave work. Luckily I only have a half day today. 😉

Kieran – welcome to our lagoon!!!!!! The Mermaids love you! I will always be a fan of yours and not only because I overheard you giving a lecture on the importance of romance novels to the owner of that used book store in Sunset Beach. Ha-ha! But you gave a fantabulous talk at the PRO retreat at RWA last year in NYC. You talked about loving yourself and accepting who you are and how that would impact your writing – it had a big impact on me. So thank you thank you thank you! Big smoochies to you! 😉

  8. Ahh, you Mermaids sure know how to make someone feel loved. Thank you so much. I love you all right back!!!! {{{{{The Fantabulous Waterworld Mermaids}}}}}

Of course, I think Dana looks LOVELY in the video, and I feel I look like an alien impersonating a human with my odd little leers and strange eyebrow quirks. And then there is always that ten pounds I want to lose. But that’s okay. It’s so much fun to be my age now and say that. Time is too short to complain and whine about stuff! I have too many friends who are either sick with cancer or aren’t even around any more, so really–the priorities MUST be in order.

The best thing for me about this video was being able to share some of the things I’ve learned along the way, like that part about separating yourself from both your successes and your failures. Know who YOU are–not just your story, although that is important, too–and let go of everything but your purpose and your sense of fun. Play, play, play. Accept failure as part of the process. Beautiful things can come from failure–enlightenments that we didn’t realize we needed but did. And if you can stay vulnerable and open, in spite of what pains will surely come your way, you’ll live a more authentic life–and your writing will reflect that.

That’s what people want to read: authenticity, in their fiction most of all. Write real. Write from the heart. I promise it will pay off. There are all kinds of success, but the only success worth having is the kind that originates from sincerity of purpose.

To all the Mermaids, who have very big hearts (I know this from interacting with you): I wish you joy in your writing!!! And I know you will all be tremendously successful in the marketplace. Stay the course!!!

    Hugs,

    Kieran :>)

      1. Hey! YOU’RE the sweetie, not me!!! I am the yakking-est woman in town. I barely breathed on that interview, and you endured so graciously!!!

        ;>)

  9. Great interview, Kieran and Dana. I loved it! Especially the part about fear because that’s my biggest daily struggle when I sit down at the computer. I am so happy for your success and wish you so much more!

    1. Thank you, Sharon!!! You’re a big reason I’m so grounded. You keep me honest with myself, and that’s the best kind of friend to have. I’m so lucky you’re also my SIL.

      <3

And someday, I'll be sitting behind a table at a book signing holding YOUR books and helping you deal with the huge line of readers that will be snaking around the conference room floor because they came to see Sharon Wray!!!

  10. Kieran! It was a happy day when I “discovered” you! Hehe, not that anyone else had ev-er heard of you. Nope. My discovery. *Love* the House of Brady concept. It feeds my 1970s’ upbringing. Yum!

  11. Keely, fist bump on the ’70’s upbringing! I was so clueless that I was a kid living through the most groovy-fun decade EVER…me with my purple bike with the banana seat and the tassels on the handlebars and the Partridge Family and Brady Bunch on TV!

Thanks for chiming in. We may be revealing our age, but it is SO worth it. Next time we see each other, we’re going to have a private 70’s trivia session at the nearest bar.

    XOXO

  12. Can’t wait to watch these videos!! I already know they’ll be fabulously fun and informative – cuz that’s how your roll, right Kieran?? Thanks for sharing your expertise. Best to you!!

  13. Dana Mermaid and Kieran, I was so happy to find out this would be a video interview and not just print. I’ve been lucky to get to hear you speak a couple times, Kieran, and you’re just so inspiring and a joy to listen to and watch and get all that really good-hearted-feeling from live. Thank you so much, as everyone has said today! Fishy hugs and kisses to the both of you!

  14. Wow! What a great video interview Dana and Kieran!! It looked like you were a couple of friends having a chat over coffee. Always good to hear about our friends out there. I loved growing up in the 70’s and 80’s–my girls (17/20) love the music and movies from “my” eras so it’s great to have that to fall back on.
All the best to you Kieran! Thanks for stopping by and swimming with us today!

    Hugs!

  15. Thanks, Tracy, Avery, Carlene, and Loni, for your very sweet comments!!! It really was fun to do the video instead of a regular blog. I LOVE watching author videos! I watched an interview with Jayne Ann Krentz the other day with some Seattle-based TV show, and it’s always so fun. I learn something each time.

Dana, my purple banana seat bike had this big u-shaped metal rod about three or four feet higher than the seatback that you could lean on…I have no idea what is was called!

Oh, wait! It’s called a sissy bar!! I just looked it up. OMG, I haven’t said that since I was like 10 or 11 years old.

    Sissy bar!!! (grin)

And as for the 80’s, I loved Hall and Oates…I’m going to see them Dec. 12th in concert here in my town! Yay!!! I especially love the song that goes “You Make-a My Dreams come True.” Did you see 500 Days of Summer? It was in that, and I loved that scene!!!

All righty, ladies, back to WORK! it’s too late on Friday night to be working, but I need to with my deadline looming. Thanks again for having me here–I had a GREAT time.

    Much love,

    Kieran :>)
