A Friday the 13th Treat: The Waterworld Mermaids Scary Books Giveaway!

Today’s giveaway is all about celebrating the scary, creepy, but not too creepy, things that go bump in the night (or swim in the dark:). If you enjoy reading paranormal, urban fantasy, romantic suspense, thrillers, horror, mystery or cool children’s books from the world of science fiction or fantasy–Friday the 13th is your lucky day! Why?

Last night, the Waterworld Mermaids broke into their underwater treasure chests and discovered our biggest book giveaway ever!

13 books on Friday the 13 to 3 lucky winners!

For a chance to win four (and someone wins five) fantastic books selected by the Mermaids from their personal bookshelves, you only have to leave a comment here in this blog post. If you’d also like to let us know what book or film keeps you up nights – we don’t mind offering a fin (or at least a fishy eye) to keep you safe from the big bad.

  1. Good Creepy Spooky Morning everyone! Denny Mermaid, thank you for this gorgeous Friday the 13th Fun. Pet Sematary by Stephen King was the first and last scary (I mean really scary) book I’ve ever read and that was back when I was a tender ten-year old tadpole. I’m happy to share that fright with some lucky winner today! Good luck everyone, if that’s even possible today…muah-ah-ah-ah 😉

  2. Ooga Booga everyone!

I do not read scary books or watch scary movies! I love to sleep and be able to go down in my basement, so I stay away from things that go bump in the night.

My giveaway, Mummy Dearest by Josh Lanyon, is set on Halloween, features a mystery about a mummy princess and has a character named Fraser Fortune – seriously awesome. It has a touch of the old school (the best school, IMHO) campiness that made me laugh all through it and gave me just enough frightful tingle to get the blood pumping.

This is an e-book, so the winner will have it gifted to them in their favorite format.

    Happy Friday the 13th!

    Robin

  3. Happy Friday the 13th, everyone! I don’t read scary books, either, so I’ve chosen two of my favorite books.
A children’s SF: Ender’s Game (Earth is being attacked by an alien race, and humanity’s best hope is to send their brightest children to battle-school in outer space.)
A sexy paranormal, Book 1 of the Anita Blake series: Guilty Pleasures. (A kick a$$ heroine and a love triangle with a sexy vampire and sensitive werewolf, published years before the Twilight series.)
Since I can’t bear to part with my own copies, both these copies are brand-new.
    Good luck in the drawing!!

    1. Avery Mermaid, when Denny Mermaid asked me to tell her what I loved about Pet Sematary, I couldn’t do it. I have no recollection of the story. What I do remember is pulling it out after my mom tucked me in each night and reading it to the point of tears. Obviously it was good because I finished the darn thing!

      1. I remember! That book was scary, creepy and the biggest rejection of free will I’ve ever read. I didn’t read Stephen King for YEARS after that book!

        1. Haha, Susan Mermaid, I went from that to Gone With The Wind. What was your happy book after reading Pet Sematary?

          1. Oh, my goodness, so many. Sunshine and Shadow, by Sharon and Tom Curtis, stands out. I have all of Kathy Seidel’s Harlequins. The Apen Hill Public Library didn’t bother checking out series romances during the 80s. I brought home dozens in paper bags, read them and returned. Talk about a free education!

  4. Scariest movie ever for me is “The Silence of the Lambs.” The Thomas Harris book and his RED DRAGON kept my pulse pounding, too. But my favorite scary book is Tom Savage’s VALENTINE, even if PW did call it gimicky.

  5. Happy Friday the 13th, everyone! I love reading the scaring stuff. But watching them in a movie freaks me out! But the one book that got me going was Pet Sematary by Stephen King. To this day, I will not hang my feet over the edge of my bed!

    1. Oh my goodness, me too! Me too! I should say, me neither! Me neither! Virtual high five!

    2. Brenna, I know! That had to be the scariest moment ever! Well, except for I recently finished The Strain by Chuck Hogan, and well, I held my iPad in one hand and chewed through a nail in the other – rats are scary, but the thing that scared the rats in this one scene – freaking scary ridiculous. I’m still traumatized:)…which could be a problem since I kind of like that feeling.

  6. Let me tell you lovely ladies about my book – Black Magic by Cherry Adair.

I have many fears – clowns, teenagers, colonial people… But my ultimate fear – actually reaching a phobia level – are snakes. *Kerri just squirmed in her chair.* Black Magic is all about snakes. So you’re probably wondering why I like it so much? Because the characters (of the non-snake variety) are sooooooo fantastic! You will love this book – and do a little squirming in your chair.

    Happy Friday the 13th!

  7. I usually think about spooky things in October but Friday, April 13th should not be over looked! Great Giveaway idea, lets see if today will be lucky for me!

What keeps me up at night? Those stories that seem almost too real, hauntings also freak me out. I once watched a top scariest movies with Mermaid Kerri and had to hide behind my pillow and cover my eyes to prevent nightmares. I guess I am getting old and need to sick to books over scary movies!

    1. Hey – remember that time I made you watch The Exorcist in high school? Fun times. Ha-ha! 😉

      1. Hey Kerri Mermaid (Hi Danielle :)) Have you ever driven past the outdoor steps near the Bethesda/Georgetown border where they filmed the Exorcist priest falling?

        1. That’s next to Georgetown’s campus (my Alma-mater). It’s a big drunk quest – climbing the Exorcist stairs. Also, the crew teams have to run up and down the steps as part of their training.

        2. It’s right by the Car Barn! A friend had her wedding reception there, and when I found out about the exorcist, it was all I could think about for the rest of the reception. I kept gravitating back outside to see if I could get any weird sensations…I just ended up freaking myself out.

  8. I can remember when Mermaid Carlene was a fearless tadpole who wanted to watch all sorts of horrific films (Faces of Death ring a bell my dearest Carlene??!!??)

Now you can’t even mention Freddy Krueger in her presence without her getting the heebie geebies. Uh oh…. I think I may be in trouble for narc’ing her out… =)

    1. DO. NOT. CALL. ME. UP. TONIGHT. AND. SING. THAT. SONG. YOU. KNOW. THE. ONE. I’M. TALKING. ABOUT. I have to do my laundry in my boiler room/basement!

  9. Without a doubt the book/film that keeps me up nights is The Exorcist. Seriously scary. Thanks to it, I get the heebie-jeebies just at the sight of pea-soup.

    Happy Friday 13th!

  10. Friday the 13th and tax time within days of each other! Double-feature scary!

Scariest book – Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot – anytime I hear scratching around the house, I’m convinced it’s a vampire infestation.

  11. I don’t tend to watch scary movies or read scary books but when I was in about third grade I watched Clue (a not scary comedic murder mystery) and had nightmares for three weeks! I couldn’t go anywhere without fearing that someone would jump out from the shadows with a candlestick or rope and murder me haha. I was quite a needy and unique child as P. H. can probably confirm 🙂

  12. The movie that scared me was “The Fourth Kind”. It’s about alien contact and not the friendly kind. Movie is based on actual person’s life. I was so upset about it that I had to watch something silly to get it out of my mind. Hubby laughted. Now I do read Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Clive Barker and they have never bothered me as much as that movie.

  13. Scariest movie: The Shining (shiver) ;-(
Scariest book: Helter Skelter (puke) 🙁
    PS
Please don’t send me scary books – just commenting 🙂

  14. I love all things horror! My favorite scary book is Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill and my favorite horror movie is The Hitcher.

  15. Let’s see…

Movies that used to scare me out of this world: E.T., The Dark Crystal, and Creep Show; movies that still scare me silly: The Brood, 1984, and the Ring (I haven’t seen it, just listened from the next room and I still get the heeby geebies thinking about it), and KWAIDAN (the scariest thing of all time)! Books that used to scare me: Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass–the Jaberwocky part, The Witches, and Something Wicked this Way Comes; books that still send chills down my spine: 1984, Tales of Moonlight and Rain (Ugetsu Monogatari), and he Greenwood Encyclopedia of Folktales and Fairy Tales.

    1. I loved the Dark Crystal. But I’m right there with you with The Ring. And The Grudge. I’m a wussy when it comes to those types of movies.

        1. I think it’s safe to say whenever the devil decides to borrow someone’s body, it’s pretty flippin’ scary! It’s like, “Hello? Did you even ask me first?” Uh no. Geesh.

  16. Hi everyone! I hope I’m not too late! The scariest book for me was Pet Cemetery. And the scariest movie? Definitely Poltergeist! I saw it years ago, but it still keeps me up at night sometimes!
    Thanks for the giveaway!
    Kanya 🙂

    1. Yay! Another person pemanently petrified by Pet Sematary! Woot Woot! 😉
